Suddenly, a foul smell spread from an old sewer nearby. A local remarked, \u201cThis stench is the reality of our city.It happens quite often.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That smell in the city was from human waste. We often treat the subject of human excreta with shame or discomfort, but its management is essential for health, the environment, and society.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Human waste management is not just about cleaning up filth &#8211; it concerns our health, our environment, and our future. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong> Why is it necessary?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>(a) For health security<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 When excreta is left unmanaged, diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, and hepatitis A spread.<\/li>\n<li>\u2022 According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 500,000 children die every year from diarrhea caused solely by poor sanitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>(b) For protection of water sources<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 Open drains or open defecation pollute both groundwater and surface water.<\/li>\n<li>\u2022 In many Nepali cities, rivers and streams are directly contaminated with waste, making the water unsafe to drink.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>(c) For environmental balance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 Poor management of human waste harms not only rivers and streams but also soil, plants, and animals.<\/li>\n<li>\u2022 Emissions of greenhouse gases such as methane increase, contributing to climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>(d) For human dignity and social development<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 Access to safe toilets and sanitation is a basic human right.<\/li>\n<li>\u2022\u00a0 For women, children, and people with disabilities in particular, it is linked to safety, privacy, and self-respect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong> Learning from international practices<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>(a) Singapore: The \u201cTotal Waste Management\u201d model<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 Singapore channels all human waste to modern treatment plants where it is converted into clean water and fertilizer.<\/li>\n<li>\u2022 The treated water, branded as \u201cNEWater\u201d, is reused in industries and parks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>(b) Japan: High-tech toilets and recycling systems<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 Japanese toilets often separate and process human excreta. In some places, fecal matter is converted into fertilizer for agriculture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>(c) Sweden: Urine diversion systems<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 Toilets that separate urine and feces are used to collect nutrients, which are then turned into organic fertilizer.<\/li>\n<li>\u2022 This helps recycle essential agricultural elements like phosphorus and nitrogen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>(d) India: Swachha Bharat Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 Since 2014, the campaign has built millions of toilets in both rural and urban areas.<\/li>\n<li>\u2022 The focus is not only on construction but also on long-term operation and fecal sludge treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong> Our reality and the way forward<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In Nepal, fecal sludge management (FSM) systems are now being introduced in many cities, where waste collected from septic tanks is taken to specialized treatment plants for safe processing.<\/p>\n<p>However, challenges remain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2022 Insufficient treatment facilities<\/li>\n<li>\u2022 Lack of proper pipeline systems<\/li>\n<li>\u2022\u00a0 Limited public awareness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Human waste management is not just about cleaning up filth &#8211; it concerns our health, our environment, and our future.
