Dhangadhi: Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City<\/span><\/span> is preparing to transition into a modern waste management system. An integrated waste management center equipped with advanced technology has been completed at Patela Forest in Ward No. 7, with a total investment of NPR 1.08 billion.<\/p>\n

The project has been implemented by the Federal Urban Development and Building Office, Kailali, under the Regional Urban Development Program, financed through loan and grant assistance from the Asian Development Bank<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

According to Engineer Saurabh Kalauni, only a few technical and infrastructure-related works remain before completion. These include painting and minor finishing work on the access road leading to the site. He also informed that official communication has already been made with the concerned department to upgrade waste collection vehicles in line with the new system. The center is expected to come into operation within about a month after all processes are completed.<\/p>\n

The project was a mandatory condition under the loan and grant agreement signed with ADB in 2015. However, due to prolonged delays in land acquisition, the project could not progress as planned. Although initially targeted for completion within five years, it has taken nearly a decade due to land management issues and administrative delays.<\/p>\n

As per the construction agreement, the contractor will operate the facility for the first three years, after which it will be handed over fully to Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City. Preparations for operation are in the final stage, and full management will be transferred to the local government following technology transfer.<\/p>\n

Engineer Govinda Kumar Mandal from the construction company stated that the center will be brought into immediate operation upon completion. He added that environmental improvement and greenery promotion activities will also be carried out alongside the operation of the facility.<\/p>\n

The waste management center spans 32 bighas of land and has the capacity to manage waste generated in Dhangadhi for approximately 30 years. Currently, the city produces about 60 tons of waste daily. Some of this waste is sorted in South Behadi (Ward No. 2) and recyclable materials are sold, while around 8 to 10 tons of waste is supplied to partner organizations for compost and biogas production. The remaining waste will be managed at this new facility.<\/p>\n

According to Engineer Dhiraj Bhatt, Chief of the Infrastructure Development Section of the sub-metropolitan city, the new center has the capacity to process up to 13.66 tons of waste per day. He stated that all finishing work will be completed within a month and the facility will be formally brought into operation. The center is designed to segregate waste into three categories: biodegradable waste for compost production, plastic waste for recycling, and non-recyclable waste for safe disposal at a dumping site.<\/p>\n

The construction contract was signed on December 29, 2022, with Provence Geological Engineering Complex Co. Ltd.<\/span><\/span>. However, delays in site selection, tree-cutting permits, and land preparation postponed the project by nearly two years. As a result, the project cost increased by approximately NPR 114.48 million due to land filling, site preparation, and cost variation adjustments.<\/p>\n

With the completion of all processes, Dhangadhi is set to formally introduce its first modern, scientific, and sustainable waste management system, which is expected to significantly improve urban cleanliness, environmental conditions, and long-term waste management practices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
