Kathmandu: It has been found that the demand for fecal sludge treatment in Godawari Municipality is nearly three times higher than the capacity of the existing fecal sludge treatment plant.<\/p>\n

According to Mayor Birendra Bhatta, the daily demand for fecal sludge management within the municipality ranges from 28 to 43 cubic meters per day. However, the currently operating Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) has a treatment capacity of only 13 cubic meters (13,000 liters) per day.<\/p>\n

As the demand has exceeded the treatment plant\u2019s capacity, the municipality has prioritized expanding the plant\u2019s capacity rather than focusing on stricter regulation. The municipality has emphasized the need to secure both internal and external resources for the expansion of the required physical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The municipality stated that instead of immediately introducing new acts or regulations, it has first assessed the existing legal provisions, infrastructure, and service capacity. \u201cImplementing strict legal measures without sufficient alternatives and service capacity could create difficulties for residents, so we are focusing on expanding the treatment capacity,\u201d said Mayor Bhatta.<\/p>\n

The Integrated Waste Management Center, constructed in the Chaukidanda Community Forest area under the Regional Urban Development Project of the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction with a loan investment from the Asian Development Bank, was brought into operation only from last Shrawan. The project was completed at a cost of NPR 516.974 million, including VAT.<\/p>\n

He further stated that priority has also been given to data management and the use of technology to organize citywide inclusive sanitation. The municipality informed that the Integrated Waste Management Center is regularly updating records related to daily fecal sludge management demand, operational status, and service details.<\/p>\n

According to the municipality, regular sample collection and laboratory testing are being conducted to monitor the quality of water discharged from the treatment plant. The municipality also stated that it is monitoring the demand and supply cycle to make the fecal sludge management system economically self-sustaining.<\/p>\n
