Kathmandu: Stakeholders have stated that data on safely managed sanitation in Nepal is still not being adequately collected. In particular, it has been found that there is no available data regarding the condition of human waste after treatment.<\/p>\n
According to Sudha Shrestha, National Professional Officer (WASH) at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), although Nepal has made remarkable progress in the open defecation free campaign, much work still remains in the area of safely managed sanitation.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the mid-term review program of the \u201cScaling Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Service Systems (Nepal)\u201d project, she stated that only 95 percent of Nepal\u2019s population currently has access to toilets, meaning that around 5 percent of the population is still practicing open defecation.<\/p>\n
According to government statistics, 89 percent of sanitation systems in Nepal are based on onsite sanitation, while only 11 percent are connected to sewerage-based sanitation services.<\/p>\n
She further noted that among the structures connected to sewer systems, only 3 percent of human waste is being treated. However, there is no clear data on where the treated waste goes or how it is managed and disposed of.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is simply no data on where the waste goes after treatment or how it is finally disposed of,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She emphasized that safe sanitation should not be viewed only as a matter of infrastructure development, but also as an issue closely linked with public service delivery and regulation.<\/p>\n
In this context, she stressed the need for municipalities to institutionalize effective regulation of sanitation systems, proper data management, and the safe treatment and management of human waste as a government service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
