Salyan : The issue of safe fecal sludge management was raised during the 19th Village Assembly of Darma Rural Municipality in Salyan district.<\/p>\n

During deliberations on the municipality’s policy and programme and the budget bill, assembly members emphasized the need to strengthen the safe containment and management of fecal sludge to protect public health and drinking water sources.<\/p>\n

Assembly members noted that the unsafe management of fecal sludge has contributed to the presence of E. coli<\/em> bacteria in drinking water sources, warning that inadequate sanitation practices could pose serious public health risks.<\/p>\n

Assembly member Jayaram Khadka informed the meeting that E. coli<\/em> had been detected in water sources and storage tanks during recent water quality tests conducted by the Sustainable Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (SUSWA) Project. He suggested that leakage from septic tanks connected to household toilets could be contaminating nearby drinking water sources.<\/p>\n

To address the problem, Khadka recommended promoting leak-proof twin-pit toilets and ensuring that toilet containment systems are constructed in a watertight manner to prevent fecal sludge from seeping into the surrounding environment and contaminating groundwater.<\/p>\n

Similarly, assembly member Shankare Budha pointed out that several lift drinking water and sanitation schemes are currently operating in Darma. However, he said the lack of skilled technical personnel within user committees is affecting the long-term sustainability of these systems and called for the deployment of qualified technicians.<\/p>\n

Responding to the concerns raised during the assembly, Nim Bahadur KC, Chairperson of Darma Rural Municipality and Chair of the Assembly, pledged to revise the municipality’s policy and programme to incorporate the key recommendations related to drinking water and sanitation.<\/p>\n

The 19th Village Assembly unanimously endorsed the municipality’s policy and programme and the budget bill. It also presented the estimated income and expenditure budget for the fiscal year 2083\/84 (2026\/27).<\/p>\n
