Imagine that same child looking at the river today not seeing clear water and thriving life, but instead seeing blackened water, floating plastics, unbearable odors, and a river struggling to survive. A river that once gave life is now becoming a threat to life.<\/p>\n<p>This is not just a story of a polluted river. It is the story of thousands of rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes across Nepal and around the world where untreated sewage, industrial wastewater, agricultural runoff, and plastic waste are silently destroying natural ecosystems and threatening human health. Water is not merely a resource it is the heartbeat of civilization. Every glass of drinking water, every crop growing in our fields, every fish living in our rivers, and every breath we take is connected to healthy water ecosystems. When we pollute water, we do not only harm the environment; we harm ourselves, our children, and future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Across the world, cities are expanding rapidly as people move toward urban areas for better opportunities, education, healthcare, and economic security. In 2018, about 55% of the global population (over 4.2 billion people<strong>)<\/strong> lived in urban areas, and the United Nations (UN DESA) projects this will rise to nearly 68% by 2050. While urbanization supports development, it also increases pressure on water resources through rising demand, wastewater generation, and pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Nepal is experiencing a similar transition. Urban population growth has accelerated due to migration and rapid expansion of municipalities. Around <strong>21% of Nepal\u2019s population lived in urban areas in 2011<\/strong>, and UN-based projections estimate that approximately <strong>39% of Nepal\u2019s population may live in urban areas by 2050<\/strong>. This growth has improved economic opportunities but has also placed increasing pressure on rivers, lakes, wetlands, groundwater, and wastewater management systems.<\/p>\n<p>Behind every expanding city lies an increasing demand for water, sanitation, and wastewater management. When urban development grows faster than environmental infrastructure, rivers become the silent victims. Untreated domestic sewage, industrial wastewater, plastic waste, chemical pollutants, and stormwater runoff enter natural water systems, slowly transforming rivers from sources of life into channels of pollution.<\/p>\n<p>According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene contribute to more than one million deaths every year worldwide, with children under five being among the most vulnerable. These numbers are not just statistics they represent real families, lost dreams, and lives that could have been protected through better water management and sanitation practices.<\/p>\n<p>The impact of water pollution reaches far beyond human health. Polluted rivers lose their ability to support life. Fish disappear, aquatic plants decline, and microorganisms that maintain ecological balance are destroyed. Reduced dissolved oxygen, excessive nutrient loading, toxic chemicals, and organic pollution create conditions where aquatic ecosystems can no longer survive. A dead river means a damaged ecosystem, reduced biodiversity, and a threatened future.<\/p>\n<p>For Nepal a country blessed with mountains, rivers, wetlands, and rich biodiversity protecting water resources is not only an environmental responsibility; it is a responsibility toward our identity, culture, economy, and future. The global water crisis threatens the achievement of the <strong>United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation<\/strong>. Sustainable water management means protecting the entire water cycle from safe water access and sanitation to wastewater treatment and ecosystem restoration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDG 6.1 &amp; 6.2 \u2013 Access and Hygiene:<\/strong><br \/>\nEnsure universal access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, especially for vulnerable communities. Clean water is not a privilege\u2014it is a fundamental human right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDG 6.3 &amp; 6.4 \u2013 Water Quality and Efficiency:<\/strong><br \/>\nReduce water pollution, improve wastewater treatment, promote reuse, and increase water-use efficiency. Wastewater should be treated as a resource, not waste.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDG 6.5 &amp; 6.6 \u2013 Water Management and Ecosystem Protection:<\/strong><br \/>\nPromote integrated water resource management and protect rivers, wetlands, forests, and groundwater systems to ensure long-term water security and healthy ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being<\/strong> \u2013 reducing diseases caused by contaminated water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDG 14: Life Below Water<\/strong> \u2013 protecting aquatic organisms and freshwater ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDG 15: Life on Land<\/strong> \u2013 conserving biodiversity and maintaining healthy watersheds.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving these goals requires innovation, cooperation, and a shift from pollution control toward restoration and regeneration.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>Diyalo Technologies Pvt.
