KATHMANDU : <\/strong>\u00a0The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $5 million emergency grant to support urgent rescue and relief operations following the devastating floods and debris flows that struck communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems on 26 August.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis $5 million grant is a promise kept,\u201d said ADB President Masato Kanda. \u201cWhen people in our member countries need us, we will be there for them. Families along these rivers have lost loved ones, homes, and the basic services their communities depend on. Help cannot wait. The full scale of the devastation is still being assessed, but this support will help deliver food, safe water, shelter, medicine, and other urgently needed assistance to people who need it now. When disaster strikes, ADB moves.\u201d<\/p>\n

The disaster has caused widespread loss of life and injuries, displaced families, and severely damaged homes, infrastructure, and essential services across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts. The Government of Nepal has declared the affected areas disaster crisis-affected zones and is leading large-scale response operations. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, alongside assessments of the damage and the needs of affected communities.<\/p>\n

Financed through ADB\u2019s Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund, the grant will support urgent response activities, including the provision of search and rescue equipment, medical supplies, food, safe drinking water, temporary shelter, sanitation and hygiene supplies, debris clearance, emergency stabilization works, and logistical support.<\/p>\n

ADB is working closely with the Government of Nepal, including the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, as well as United Nations agencies and development partners, to monitor the evolving situation and support the country\u2019s emergency response and recovery efforts.<\/p>\n

In addition, ADB is processing up to $150,000 through a second window of the disaster response fund to support a post-disaster needs assessment, recovery planning, and the preparation of possible recovery and reconstruction investments.<\/p>\n

At the government\u2019s request, the assessment will quantify damage and losses, identify needs across affected sectors, and help establish priorities for recovery and reconstruction.<\/p>\n

ADB has long supported Nepal\u2019s efforts to strengthen disaster resilience through investments in stronger infrastructure, institutions, and emergency preparedness. The bank will continue working alongside the Government and people of Nepal throughout the emergency response and in the recovery and reconstruction efforts that follow.<\/p>\n
