Dhangadhi: A massive integrated waste management center with fecal sludge treatment facilities is under construction in Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City.
Spread over about 22 hectares, this processing center is being built under the Regional Urban Development Project with loan investment from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), through the Ministry of Urban Development and the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction.
The estimated cost of this treatment center is about NPR 1.24 billion. Based on modern technology, once completed, this project is expected to become a model not only for Dhangadhi but also for other municipalities in Sudurpashchim Province.

According to Engineer Ashok Awasthi, Head of the Environment, Water Supply, and Sanitation Division of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, about 75 percent of the physical infrastructure has already been completed. He added that the remaining works are progressing rapidly and the facility will be operational within the coming year.
“Once this center comes into operation, Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City will move toward a long-term solution for waste management. From fecal sludge to household waste, everything will be scientifically processed here. This will not only reduce environmental pollution but also make a significant contribution to building a clean and sustainable city,” Awasthi said.
Local stakeholders and experts have also recognized this center as an important infrastructure not only for Dhangadhi but for other municipalities as well. It is expected to not only advance solid waste management scientifically but also create employment opportunities, as well as generate compost and biogas.
In recent years, Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City has undergone rapid urbanization. To provide a long-term solution to the resulting waste management challenges, this modern treatment center is being built.
