Expert Inclusive Task Force Formed to Implement Fecal Sludge Management Act

Kathmandu: Mechinagar Municipality of Jhapa has decided to effectively implement the Fecal Sludge Management Act, 2082.

A stakeholders’ meeting on fecal sludge management, chaired by Mayor Gopal Chandra Budhathoki, held extensive discussions on the matter.

The meeting decided to form a five member Task Force comprising municipal staff and experts to make recommendations for the effective implementation of the Act.

Task Force Members:

  1. Ananta Prakash Basti, Chief, Administration Section

  2. Dipendra Karki, Economic Development Section

  3. Jivan Bhattarai, Urban Development Section

From the experts’ side:

  1. Govinda Shrestha, Senior WASH Policy Advisor, WaterAid Nepal
  2. Dr. Mingma Sherpa, Director, 500B Solutions

At the beginning of the meeting, discussions were held on the provisions included in the Fecal Sludge Management Act, 2082. It was also decided to hold further discussions for the formulation of regulations, standards, and other necessary plans as mentioned in the Act.

The meeting was attended by Mayor Gopal Chandra Budhathoki along with Chief Administrative Officer Agni Prasad Adhikari; Ward Chairs of Wards No. 6, 7, 8, 11, and 12; as well as chiefs and representatives from the Economic Development Section, Infrastructure Section, Urban Development Section, Internal Audit Section, Accounts Section, Agriculture Development Section, Livestock Service Section, Enterprise Development Section, Infrastructure Development Section, and other sections.

The Scaling Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Service Systems (Nepal) Programme is being implemented in seven municipalities across all seven provinces of the country, namely Mechinagar Municipality of Jhapa, Godawari Municipality of Kailali, Sharada Municipality of Salyan, Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City of Dang, Gorkha Municipality of Gorkha, Lalitpur Metropolitan City of Lalitpur, and Lahan Municipality of Siraha.

Under this programme, technical support is being provided to the participating municipalities through coordination among the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), WaterAid Nepal, the Municipal Association of Nepal, the Ministry of Water Supply, the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management, and the Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Alliance.

This programme is being implemented with financial support from the Gates Foundation, with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) serving as the executing agency.
