Sankhuwasabha: A modern sewerage management project is advancing rapidly in Khandbari, the district headquarters of Sankhuwasabha. It has been reported that approximately 30 percent of the physical progress has been achieved so far under the Khandbari Sewerage Management Project.

The project was initiated with the support of the federal government and the initiative of Khandbari Municipality, as waste management became increasingly challenging due to growing population pressure. The Drinking Water and Sewerage Management Office, Dhankuta, invited bids in Asar 2082 and signed a contract worth NPR 182.3 million with MMCRSNS JV Construction Company.

According to Mayor Mahesh Thapaliya, a total budget of NPR 710 million has been allocated for the long-term sewerage management of Khandbari. He stated that the project is being implemented in phases with ensured budget allocation. Currently, construction work under the first phase is underway at a cost of NPR 182.3 million. The project is regarded as a pride project of the municipality.

Under the project, an underground pipeline is being extended across approximately eight kilometers, from Khandbari Bazaar to Sukechour in Ward No. 9 of the municipality. The pipeline will pass through Bhanu Chowk, the District Coordination Committee area, and various settlements before reaching the wastewater treatment plant. The pipes are being laid at a depth of about 1.5 meters, which is expected to ensure long-term safety and efficiency of the system.

To systematize wastewater collection and management, more than 340 manholes will be constructed at intervals of every 25 meters. Additionally, 14 treatment tanks are planned for wastewater processing. Wastewater from households will be treated through multiple stages in these tanks and safely discharged in an environmentally friendly manner.

According to Milan Gautam, a representative of the construction company, work is progressing with the goal of completing the project within the stipulated timeframe. He informed that about 30 percent of the work has already been completed. The treated water, though not suitable for drinking, can be used for agriculture and irrigation purposes.

A wastewater treatment plant is being constructed on approximately 75 ropanis of land in the Sukechour area. The land had previously been acquired by the municipality for landfill and sewerage management purposes. The project is expected to directly benefit around 800 households.

According to the municipality, there are plans to expand the sewerage network to areas above Bhanu Chowk in the coming year. The project aims to be completed by the end of Asar 2084. Upon completion, it is expected to bring long-term improvements in sanitation, public health, and environmental conditions in Khandbari.
