Kathmandu: The Dhobighat Wastewater Treatment Plant has been disrupted after heavy flooding in the Bishnumati and Bagmati rivers entered the facility last night.
The treatment plant had already been undergoing cleaning and maintenance after sand and water entered the wastewater system earlier, disrupting its operation.
Project Director at the Project Implementation Directorate (PID), Er. Ram Kumar Shrestha, said that the treatment plant was disrupted after additional floodwater entered the facility on Monday night.
The floodwater entered the treatment plant while it was still under testing, affecting both the flow of wastewater into the plant and the treatment process. The plant, which has a treatment capacity of 37.2 million litres of wastewater per day, had been undergoing testing since June 30.
The Project Implementation Directorate had already been carrying out pipeline cleaning to remove the sand accumulated in the main wastewater system. However, the situation worsened when floodwater entered the facility while the cleaning work was still underway.
Project Director Shrestha said that the pipeline had been laid by the Bagmati Sabhyata Yakikrit Bikash Samiti and coordination was underway with the concerned agency for pipeline cleaning and necessary management. Although the cleaning work has already begun, it will take several days to completely clear the pipeline. As a result, the treatment plant will remain out of operation during this period.
According to Project Director Shrestha, the testing process at the Dhobighat Wastewater Treatment Plant will resume only after the main wastewater system is fully restored.
