Nuwakot: A devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River has washed away the entire structures of two wastewater treatment plants being constructed under the Trishuli Bazaar Sewerage Construction and Treatment Project in Bidur Municipality, Nuwakot, causing damages worth more than NPR 113.8 million.
According to Purna Prasad Upadhyay, Chief of the Water Supply and Sewerage Management Office, Bhaktapur, the flood caused an estimated total financial loss of NPR 113,882,471.68 to the project after destroying major physical structures of the two treatment plants.
The two treatment facilities—Colony Treatment Plant and Bidur Treatment Plant—were being constructed to serve Wards No. 1, 2, 4 and 9 of Bidur Municipality.
According to Upadhyay, the treatment plants included a range of structures and infrastructure, including collection chambers, bar screens, grit chambers, settlers, anaerobic baffled reactors (ABRs), sludge drying beds (SDBs), reed beds, office buildings, guard houses, stone masonry structures, shear walls, compound walls, gabions, pipelines and access roads.

How Much Damage Was Caused at Each Treatment Plant?
Colony Treatment Plant
The Colony Treatment Plant suffered an estimated NPR 60,716,933.55 in damage. Several major structures at the site, including the office building, shear wall, ABR and reed bed, were damaged or swept away by the flood.
Bidur Treatment Plant
The Bidur Treatment Plant sustained an estimated NPR 53,165,538.13 in physical damage as a result of the flood.
Major Infrastructure Damage
The flood damaged or completely destroyed 15 different physical structures and infrastructure components associated with the project.
Among the major losses were:
• Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR): NPR 27,088,026.66 in damage across the two treatment plants.
• Reed Beds: NPR 17,434,390 in damage.
• Road works: NPR 10,564,376.20 in damage.
• Gabion, stone masonry and compound wall structures: More than NPR 18.2 million in damage.
• Pipelines and collection chambers: More than NPR 14.9 million in damage.
• Office buildings and guard houses: More than NPR 8.4 million in damage.
Flood Strikes as Construction Nears Completion
The project was awarded to Gauri Parvati/Gulliver World JV, Kathmandu, under a contract agreement signed on June 22, 2023 (Jestha 8, 2080 B.S.).
According to the contract, the project was scheduled to be completed by December 17, 2026 (Poush 1, 2083 B.S.).
However, just as construction was nearing completion, the unexpected Bhotekoshi flood swept away major physical structures of the treatment plants.
The destruction has raised serious concerns about the future of the project, which was intended to provide wastewater treatment services to several wards of Bidur Municipality.
The scale of the damage has also created uncertainty over how and when the destroyed treatment infrastructure will be reconstructed and how the project will move forward following the disaster.
