Syangja : Waling Municipality of Syangja has emerged as a model in effective waste management, generating nearly NPR 2.7 million in revenue during the last fiscal year. The income came from waste collection service fees and sales of recyclable materials.

According to Mayor Krishna Khan, the municipality currently collects waste daily from around 3,000 households across the municipal area. The municipality collects two types of waste, organic and inorganic and has been able to raise NPR 2.5 million from waste management fees and around NPR 200,000 from the sale of segregated waste materials.

As shared by Mani Regmi, Chief of the Environment and Sanitation Section, the municipality collects about 10 tons of waste every day. five tons of organic and five tons of inorganic from the market and surrounding areas. The organic waste, including grass, vegetable peels, fruit remains, paper, and kitchen waste, is converted into compost and organic fertilizer using the vermicomposting method.

Inorganic waste such as plastics, clothes, tins, irons, and cartons are sold to recyclers based on weight. For the ongoing fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26), the municipality has set a target to earn around NPR 3 million from waste management fees alone.

Established in 1996 (2053 BS), Waling Municipality does not yet have a landfill site in operation. However, it has been managing faecal sludge treatment in collaboration with the Environment and Public Health Organisation (ENPHO).

According to Chief Administrative Officer Ganga Lal Subedi, the municipality provides faecal sludge management services at a rate of NPR 6,500 per tank, separating liquid and solid waste at the treatment plant. The solid portion is further processed into compost.

Deputy Mayor Kavita Tiwari shared that while many municipalities across the country manage waste through public–private partnerships, Waling has been running its system independently under municipal leadership.

“The sanitation center established for waste segregation has now evolved into a learning hub,” Tiwari said.

The municipality further informed that not only do officials from different municipalities visit Waling to learn from its best practices, but international delegations have also started to visit. To support such learning visits, an information center has been set up within the sanitation facility to provide insights into Waling’s integrated waste management model.
