Mahendranagar: Integrated waste management centers constructed in Kanchanpur and Kailali districts of Sudurpashchim Province have come into operation. The waste management centers were built with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Regional Urban Development Project.
The waste management centers located in Attariya of Kailali and in Shuklaphanta Municipality of Kanchanpur have already started operation. Tulsi Ram Kharbuja, Chief of the Federal Project Implementation Unit, Dhangadhi, said that the waste management center in Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City will also come into operation soon.
Although construction was completed within the stipulated time, the waste management center being built at Patela in Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City–7 has not yet come into operation.
The center, which has an estimated cost of over NPR 1.09 billion, has been delayed due to the variation order process currently under review. “We have submitted the VO proposal to the higher authority,” said Chief Kharbuja. “The variation order had to be initiated after the municipality requested additional construction works and vehicles necessary for waste management that were not included in the original estimate.”
The waste management center in Dhangadhi will be capable of managing the city’s waste for the next 30 years. The construction was completed on schedule by China’s Sichuan Province Geological Engineering Complex, which had secured the contract. However, due to the VO issue, the construction company has not been able to continue further work.
According to the Federal Project Implementation Unit, the construction company itself will operate the management center for three years before handing it over to the respective municipality.
Although ADB had selected four municipalities in Sudurpashchim Province for the construction of waste management centers, Bhimdatta Municipality in Kanchanpur failed to provide land for the project. The waste management centers have been built on 22 hectares in Dhangadhi, five bighas in Shuklaphanta, and five hectares in Attariya.
The operational waste management centers are managing waste by segregating it into three categories: recyclable, biodegradable, and non-recyclable/non-saleable waste.
The waste management center in Shuklaphanta Municipality was constructed with an investment of NPR 302.5 million.
According to Shuklaphanta Municipality, the waste management center has come into operation on the banks of the Banhara River within the Shree Krishna Community Forest area in Ward No. 11.
Lokendra Bhatt, an engineer at Shuklaphanta Municipality Office, said that the work of the waste management center has been highly effective. “Waste containers have been placed in all wards,” he said. “In urban wards, waste is collected every day and transported to the management center.”
He added that since the operation of the waste management center began, Shuklaphanta Municipality has been giving greater priority to cleanliness and sanitation.
