Integrated Waste Management Center with 13,000 Liters Fecal Sludge Treatment Capacity Operational in Godavari

Dhangadhi: An integrated solid waste management center constructed in Godawari Municipality of Kailali has come into operation. A large integrated waste management center with the capacity to treat 13,000 liters of fecal sludge daily has been brought into operation.

Godawari Municipality Mayor Birendra Bhatta initiated the center’s operation by performing a puja. Mayor Bhatta said that the waste management center is a matter of joy for the residents. He expressed confidence that it would make a significant contribution to building a clean and beautiful city.

“This major and important project of the municipality has come into successful operation. Through this, waste management in all wards of the municipality will move forward effectively,” he said.

The waste management center will be operated by the construction contractor for three years. After that, the responsibility of the center will be taken over by the municipality. Mayor Bhatta said that eight employees have currently been deployed to the center to prepare skilled manpower for effective operation after the responsibility is handed over to the municipality. He added that these employees will gain experience while working and later facilitate operations once the center comes under the municipality.

Just some time ago, the integrated waste management center was monitored by a team including UN-Habitat’s National Professional Officer (WASH) Sudha Shrestha and CWISAN coordinator Satish Jung Shahi.

Along with Godawari Municipality in Kailali, the program Scalling of Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Service System is being operated in seven municipalities across the country with financial management from UN-Habitat.

Investment of NPR 510 million

Under the Regional Urban Development Project by the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, and with loan investment from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the integrated waste management center was constructed at a cost of NPR 516,974,499 including VAT in the Chaukidanda Community Forest area.

The center was built by Sichuan Province Geological Engineering Company of China and was inaugurated on the 22nd of Jesth 2082 by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh.

The center includes waste management cells, compound, fecal sludge treatment plant, waste processing blocks, and other infrastructures.

Currently, about two tons of solid waste is collected daily from the Godawari Municipality area. The main market here is Attariya. Previously, the collected waste was being managed in the area eroded by the Godawari River within the Malakheti Community Forest.

According to the municipality, the integrated waste management center can treat 13 metric tons of solid waste and 13 cubic meters of fecal sludge daily.

The municipality collects waste daily and weekly from 8 out of its 12 wards. Speaking at the event, Mayor Bhatt said that biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste will be separated, compost will be produced from biodegradable waste, and reusable non-biodegradable items will be processed, making the waste management center a source of income as well.
