Kathmandu: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have released a new report revealing that two out of every five people in Nepal still do not have access to safely managed sanitation services.

The report, titled “Progress on Household Drinking Water and Sanitation 2000–2024: Special Focus on Inequalities,” was launched on August 26 during the World Water Week held in Stockholm, Sweden.

The data for Nepal was prepared by the Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP), based on the Census 2021, the National Living Standards Survey (NLSS) 2022/23, the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2022, and the Urban Nepal Sanitation Snapshot 2025, among other national surveys.

Key findings for Nepal:

  • • 2 out of every 5 people lack access to safely managed sanitation services.

  • •  1 out of every 4 people lack access to safely managed drinking water services.

  • •  1 out of every 3 people lack access to basic handwashing facilities.

Acceleration needed globally to achieve the 2030 targets:

  • • 3 times faster progress is required to achieve universal access to drinking water.

  • • 8 times faster progress is required for safely managed sanitation services.

  • The current pace is sufficient to sustain open defecation-free status.

  • • 3 to 6 times faster progress is needed for basic sanitation services.

  • •  2 times faster progress is needed for basic handwashing facilities.

The report concludes that to ensure universal access to drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene by 2030, the world must make significantly greater efforts than at present.
