Blue Waste to Value Introduces Innovative Food Waste Reduction Program with Municipal and Sectoral Collaboration

Kathmandu : In commemoration of World Earth Day, Blue Waste to Value Pvt. Ltd. held an Inception Workshop on the program “Reduce Food Waste and Demonstrate Wise Utilization Methods to the Public in Kathmandu City: Piloting a Zero Waste to Cafe Model”. The effort is supported by the DCA Innovation Fund. The theme for this year is our Power Our Planet.

The Co-founder and CEO of Blue Waste to Value Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Nabin Bikash Maharjan, presented the program activities. He stated that this Cafe will help to raise consumer awareness about waste reduction, make people more conscious of what they eat, create values for waste food, and demonstrate the best models of resourcing and management using alternatives to plastics and other complex materials that enter the kitchen. The café will also plan to test the food for quality so that the consumer gets the best cuisine with an economical approach, reducing litter and appreciating the work put into food preparation and adding value to it.

A cafe will also help to educate clients on how to reduce, reuse, and recycle in order to attain zero waste, among other things. The successful trial of this café model will assist existing food service businesses such as cafes, restaurants, and hotels in finding solutions to their food waste concerns and implementing an environmentally friendly business strategy.

The workshop included members from Kathmandu and Lalitpur Metropolitan city, Kirtipur and Shankharapur Municipality, hotel and café representatives, Master chef Santosh Shah. Dr. Naresh Rimal, senior fellow, ISET-Nepal; Dr. Samjhana Bista, Country Director, DCA; Ms. Sarita Rai, Department head, Environment Management Department, KMC; and Chief Administrative Officer, Amrit Kumar Dhital, Shankharapur Municipality all spoke about the importance of zero waste management programs and wished for the successful implementation of such innovative cafe model programs.

Waste management is becoming a challenge for municipalities, and they are currently working to help reduce waste output from the community and waste reaching landfills. Mr. Ronish Shakya, General Manager of Blue Waste to Value Pvt. Ltd., served as the program’s MC.

Blue waste to value Pvt. Ltd. has been working since 2014 on developing waste management solutions for commercial establishments, municipalities, and healthcare facilities. The company also helps to recycle and upcycle various waste items into valuable products and has been continuously working on the environment sector, specializing in solid waste management and guiding community members, students, organizations, and government personnel to help improve waste management in their respective locations.

The programme also showcased the possible applications such as organic waste composting automated machines for households and restaurants, upcycling products of complicated materials which has been taken forward from the Blue Waste to Value at its facility.
