Nalgad, Jajarkot : Nalgad Municipality has taken a step toward strengthening safe, reliable and sustainable drinking water services by organizing its first Extended Water Safety Plan (WSP+++) Workshop, bringing water safety, service quality, risk management and long-term sustainability into the centre of local water supply planning.
The workshop was organized with the support of the Sustainable WASH for All (SUSWA) Project and brought together representatives from the municipal health section, Water Safety Plan (WSP) teams of Water Users and Sanitation Committees (WUSCs), Village Maintenance Workers (VMWs) and other stakeholders involved in drinking water service delivery across the municipality.

The workshop focused on identifying and managing risks throughout the water supply chain from water sources to consumers’ taps. Participants discussed measures to improve water quality, strengthen operation and maintenance, ensure effective service management and enhance the long-term sustainability of water supply systems.
“Safe drinking water requires continuous attention to water quality and proactive management of risks from the source to the point of consumption,” said Er. Nirajan Shrestha, Governance Specialist at SUSWA. He emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing potential risks before they affect consumers.

Similarly, Pramod Lal Shrestha, WASH Advisor at SUSWA, said sustainable water services require more than physical infrastructure. He highlighted effective operation and maintenance, institutional ownership and meaningful community participation as essential elements for keeping water supply systems functional and services reliable over time.
Providing the municipal perspective, Birendra Batala, WASH Officer at Nalgad Municipality, shared the current operational and functionality status of water supply schemes in the municipality. He also highlighted key priorities related to system management, maintenance and further improvement.
The WSP+++ approach integrates water safety and quality with operation and maintenance, institutional arrangements, risk management and sustainable service delivery. The approach is expected to strengthen coordination among the municipality, WUSCs, WSP teams, service providers and communities.

The workshop also emphasized that water safety planning should not be treated as a one-time activity. Instead, participants discussed the need for regular risk assessment, monitoring, corrective action and review to ensure continued improvement in water quality and service delivery.
The workshop marks a step in Nalgad’s efforts to move beyond the construction of water supply infrastructure toward ensuring safe, reliable, inclusive and sustainable drinking water services for communities.
